The VHF proving ground — at 144 MHz receive noise decides everything, which is why the 2m LFA carries our strongest following.
The 2m band is where VHF operating goes deep. At 144 MHz the modes multiply: tropo openings that stretch across seas, meteor scatter on summer showers, aurora, and EME — bouncing signals off the Moon — at the far edge of what amateur stations can do. Contesting on 2m is fierce across Europe, and the difference between stations is measured in fractions of a decibel.
Those fractions are why the LFA matters most here. Urban noise floors at 144 MHz have risen relentlessly, and the closed-loop driven element's rejection of off-axis and local noise translates directly into the G/T figure that EME and weak-signal operators live by. It is no accident that 2m LFA Yagis appear in so many of the world's serious moonbounce arrays.
